A tale from the trenches • Maciej Przepióra • Devoxx Poland 2021

How to safely execute schema changes like changing the primary key of the table on a scale of millions of users and thousands of tenants and not have an incident? How to not make SREs angry with you for being woken up in the mediate of the night? This talk is based on real-life events, any resemblance to actual products might not be coincidental.

Maciej Przepióra:
Writing computer programs has been my passion since I was a kid, but back then I didn't think it would be my career choice. I studied Molecular Biology and Computer discipline at College of Interfaculty Individual Studies in Maths and Natural Sciences at Warsaw University. After graduating in Molecular Biology I decided to prosecute my career in IT. I have been developing web applications in Java and JavaScript for more than 10 years now. I worked for Capgemini, Polish National Center for investigation and Development, Bunge. In September 2013 I joined Vaadin, the Finnish company behind the framework with the same name, where I worked as a programmer and trainer, developing, among others, Vaadin Designer. In spring 2018 I left Vaadin to research opportunities in Poland and around the world. In May 2019 I joined Atlassian, where I make 1 of the most popular tools utilized by software engineers all around the planet – Jira. My speaking experiences include Devoxx.PL, Gr8Conf, Liferay DevConf, and Confitura.
