Three inmates have been charged with murder following the death of convicted child killer Kyle Bevan at HMP Wakefield. The 33-year-old was found dead in his cell on Wednesday morning, less than a month after another notorious prisoner died at the same high-security facility.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed officers were called to the prison at 8:25 am on November 5. Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle announced on Thursday evening: «After extensive enquiries into Mr Bevan's death we are now treating this as a murder.» Three men aged 45, 57, and 63 remain in police custody.
Entwistle added: «We are seeking to establish the full circumstances and as part of this continue to question three men in custody.» The investigation continues as authorities work to determine exactly what happened inside the cell.
Background to Bevan's conviction
Bevan was serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 28 years for the 2020 murder of two-year-old Lola James in Pembrokeshire. The judge at his 2023 trial described the attack as «sustained, deliberate, and very violent» and called it an «exercise of power» over a helpless child. The toddler suffered approximately 101 injuries before dying on July 21, 2020.
Second death at Wakefield
The incident follows another high-profile death at HMP Wakefield. Less than a month before Bevan's death, convicted paedophile singer Ian Watkins was stabbed to death at the Category A prison. Two inmates have been charged with that alleged murder.
