Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has warned that far right rhetoric "is getting out of control" as she outlined plans to strengthen border security. The Birmingham Ladywood MP told ITV News she worries about where such rhetoric may lead the country.

Mahmood described secure borders as essential for maintaining positive race relations in Britain. She argued that border control creates space for "fundamental, decent, British people to be welcoming of those who come to our country and to contribute".

The Home Secretary emphasised politicians' responsibility to distinguish between patriotism and nationalism. "As politicians we should hold the line on what is patriotism and what is nationalism, there is a line there - I know where it is," she said.

Deportation flight details emerge

Mahmood's comments came as ITV News gained access to a deportation flight removing 47 foreign national offenders to Romania. All deportees had initially entered the UK legally before committing crimes and serving prison sentences.

The flight carried individuals convicted of serious offences including theft, sexual crimes and murder. Private contractor escorts outnumbered the deportees during the journey.

Deportees received cash cards loaded with up to £2,000, which Mahmood acknowledged "doesn't look good". She defended the payments as cost-effective incentives for voluntary removal.

France deportation scheme expansion

The Home Secretary announced plans to "ramp up" the one-in-one-out deportation scheme with France that began last month. The programme removes Channel crossing migrants to the continent while allowing approved applicants in France to come to Britain.

"I will be ramping up the numbers and I hope to say more about that in the weeks to come," Mahmood stated. She expressed determination to reach deportation levels that would deter future boat crossings.

The scheme aims to prove that systematic removals can work as a deterrent. Mahmood confirmed more flights would operate this week as part of the escalating programme.
