Manually instrumenting an application to make traces, metrics, and logs is hard work. Take, for example, manually adding distributed tracing to an application. You request to realize concepts including traces, spans, content propagation, and tags as well as configuration, processing and exporting. Automatic instrumentation abstracts all of this away, requiring only a couple of dependencies to be installed and any runtime parameters to be changed. In this talk, we’ll walk through instrumenting a Java application with OpenTelemetry utilizing manual and automatic instrumentation. We’ll besides research the pros and cons of each approach and how they can be utilized together.
