Prof. Goran Petrovski, M.D., Ph.D., Dr. Habil., a leading European specialist in vitreoretinal surgery, cell-based therapies, and advanced diagnostics of retinal diseases, has been nominated by the Board of SCOP – the Association of Ophthalmic Surgeons of Poland – for „the Special Society Award “. Dr. Petrovski heads the Center of Eye Research at the University of Oslo and Oslo University Hospital, where he leads projects combining ophthalmology with cutting-edge biotechnology, 3D tissue engineering, and artificial intelligence.

„Prof. Petrovski will receive the prestigious award during the “ Update in Ophthalmology – Education and Practice” Conference, which will be held in Lublin on February 6 – 7, 2026” – ” – says Prof. Robert Rejdak, President of SCOP. He adds: “In each edition, we present the Special Society Award for groundbreaking diagnostic, scientific and therapeutic innovations.”

As a surgeon, Prof. Goran Petrovski has performed more than 8,500 ophthalmic procedures — from cataract surgery and treatment of diabetic complications to the most demanding vitreoretinal operations, such as retinal detachment repair, removal of foreign bodies, and advanced macular micro-surgery. He has worked in leading centers in Norway, Austria, Slovenia, and Hungary, consistently combining clinical practice with translational research.

One of his major fields of focus is diabetic retinopathy — a condition that remains the leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults in developed countries. Prof. Petrovski led a European pilot screening program under the auspices of EURETINA and currently oversees implementation projects in Oslo and the Baltic states, using artificial intelligence to personalize care and enable early detection.

His scientific achievements — spanning stem cell research, autophagy, cell death, and tissue engineering — are reflected in an impressive citation record (nearly 20,000 citations) and strong standing in international bibliometric rankings. He is also the recipient of several prestigious distinctions, including the TOP25 Physician-Scientist Award in Hungary and the Silver Medal of Acta Ophthalmologica for Best Publication.

Highly regarded as a mentor and educator, he has supervised and trained numerous young researchers and clinicians. He combines surgical precision with scientific insight — and, importantly, a rare ability to view medical innovation not only through the lens of technology, but also through a broader sense of social responsibility.
